 English I
 Course Description

Although English I is suitable for any student in grades 9-12, it is a foundational course and is therefore recommended as a pre-requisite for any other Write4Homeschool courses--especially for 9th graders. With a focus on writing, English I emphasizes not only specific techniques, but also the mechanics of and rules that govern effective writing.

One of the best ways to learn effective writing techniques is to read outstanding writing. English I presents students with a sampling of significant and well-known literary examples. In addition to various reading assignments, the course offers an assortment of activities to reinforce concepts learned in the lessons. Students also wrap up many of the units by sharing their writings through public speaking. Finally, as with all Write4Homeschool courses, students have the opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas through the Forum.

 English II
 Course Description

English II introduces two of history's greatest epic poems: Beowulf and Homer's Odyssey. Additionally, students will accompany Chaucer on his great Canterbury Tales pilgrimage. Next, Shakespeare's Julius Caesar will afford students an opportunity to become familiar with theater. Finally, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will provide a brief respite from the tales of male heroes and mighty warriors. To add variety, students will take several poetry pauses in order to study extraordinary poets and the words they penned years ago. Through all of their literary adventures, students will put into practice the writing techniques they learned in English I and, of course, have opportunities for public speaking as they share their writings. To make the English II class complete, the Forum will provide a unique environment where students can share ideas and insights with the teacher and with each other.

 English III
 Course Description

English III circumnavigates the world. Students will begin in France and England with Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities and then move on to Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. From there they venture to Africa for Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Then it is adventure on an island as students share in the angst of a group of boys vying for position as Lord of Flies. Finally, students will find themselves in the midst of another tragic competition for power in Shakespeare's Macbeth. The emphasis for English III is on literary analysis, and students will have plenty of opportunity to practice as they respond to each novel. In addition, students will practice their public speaking as they present their writings, and they will again have the chance to share ideas and insights on the Forum.
